The AGM is scheduled to be held in January 2011, the date will be posted on the railings & the website.
2009/2010 Gardening Progress
The most significant change to the garden this year has been the installation of the computerised irrigation system, commissioned & overseen by the treasurer, Matt Scammell. The sprinkler system will allow us to grow a much wider range of plants and shrubs, and will ensure a healthy lawn.
Following the bedding in of 20 tons of manure, 5000 spring bulbs & 150 shrub roses were planted in early spring this year. This produced an impressive show of blooms from March to June.
A large variety of colourful perennials, sourced from specialist nurseries around the country, have been planted in both the interior and perimeter beds. In addition, the many large shrubs planted in the beds bordering the railings, will continue to bush out over the coming months and years, providing more privacy for users of the garden.
A tropical bed was established in July. Among the many exotic specimens sourced we now have bamboos, banana trees, Cana lilies, large mature palms and an impressive 20ft bamboo.
Last autumn the proposed wildlife garden was sectioned off and planted with mixed hedging, comprising hazel, beech, buddleia, blackthorn & hawthorn. A meadow mixture will be sown in the spring, and together with the specially constructed log-wall, will encourage insects and small mammals to colonise this area. The many birdfeeders placed here this year have already resulted in a significant increase in the number & variety of birds visiting the garden.
2010/2011 Forward Gardening Schedule
The gardeners will be concentrating on the neglected area adjoining the houses on Collingham Road. They will be reshaping and replanting the back borders & paths. Any planting suggestions (from those residents backing on to this area) will be welcome.
All trees are due to be checked by the council tree specialist this autumn. The committee is also discussing the planting of a number of new young trees.
The purchase of several more fixed benches is being discussed.
The sand pit has been cleaned out and replenished, and is due to have a secure cover fitted in next few months. It is hoped that parents & nannies will replace the cover each time they leave - ensuring the sandpit remains clean and free of animal deposits.
Important: Parties & Fireworks
